I kills you computer irony!
I AM KILLING THE COMPUTER IN MY HEART AND IN MY MIND.
DIE COMPUTER DIE DIE DIE.
Ok. So. I'm not a super techno genius. I have not claimed to be. Mostly, I just try and apply logic and reasoning and listen to my brothers because they've actually taken classes in this stuff.
But, see, my primary computer is a laptop. A fairly old laptop. I was told, "Oh, you'll want to back up your files." I also don't have a lot of space on ye ol' Lappy 2000 so an external hard drive seemed like a good idea.
So, on to the hard drive went all of my extra "space slut" (grabs up all the good space 'cause they're easy) files, such as music, videos, writing back ups, and, of course, the jumbo pictures my camera produces (I like to leave them big sized so I can print them nicely at future dates). So, la di da, time goes by, elapses ...
... I take a ton of pictures of my various collections (all right, I'll admit it, when it comes to collections, I'm an inventory/organization freak) and before I upload them I decide to clear out some already uploaded pictures off of my camera. As a precautionary step, I generally check to make sure I actually did upload a photo before deleting it from camera.
So I go to my drive.
And all of my picture folders are gone.
No, scratch that, all of my folders except two. "Baby Pics" and "Boulder Cave Hike 2005" and a few random pictures of my power station. Basically, enough are left to make me wonder if I'm crazy and only IMAGINED uploading all of my photos and meticulously organizing them into folders like "Disneyland 2006" and "Pets!"
But, then the drive starts freaking out in general and so I'm not crazy. Just very, very unlucky.
Cary comes over. Installs a data recovery program, sets it up to scan the drive. After TWO DAYS it's still not done scanning but that's fine because it's only 1/3 the way through with the dagnabbed drive! So Cary stops the scan, and we do "browse found files". After another few hours, it populates the folder. Lo and behold, it has found my picture files! Hurray! But wait, to recover them, I have to buy the program. Which is $80. But wait! At this point, brother is unreachable. What should I do? $80 is a lot of money. But these are my pictures!
I then have a brilliant idea. Before doing anything rash, I'll hood the external drive up to a different computer and see what THAT computer can find. Only that didn't work at all. So I go ahead and buy the program. But wait ... now the program isn't finding my lost folders anymore! Now it's finding barely anything! I saved the scan file but loading it didn't seem to help. I feel like crying. No files, AND I lost eighty bucks! I'm retrying the deep scan again, but that'll take a while. Ugh ugh ughhly ugh.
Ok, so I just had to moan and whine a bit. Sorry.
